Egypt: Momentum building as the attack finds its rhythm

Egypt took a major step toward the knockout stage with an impressive comeback victory over New Zealand in the second round. Hossam Hassan’s men were caught off guard by an early goal, but a well-timed tactical adjustment helped them regain composure and seize control of the contest.

Once they settled, the Pharaohs grew stronger as the match progressed. Mohamed Salah and Mostafa Ziko inspired the turnaround with outstanding displays, each contributing a goal and an assist to become the first Egyptian duo to achieve that feat in a single World Cup match. Their growing chemistry has turned Egypt into one of the strongest contenders to finish top of the group.

Despite the attacking success, defensive concerns remain. Yasser Ibrahim has struggled for consistency across the opening two games, while Hamdi Fathi is doubtful after picking up an injury. Should he miss out, Rami Rabia is expected to slot into the starting lineup after an encouraging substitute appearance in the previous match.

Iran: A must-win scenario demands a more adventurous approach

Iran frustrated Belgium with a disciplined defensive display in the second round, holding the Europeans to a goalless draw despite facing 23 attempts on goal. While the result kept Team Melli in contention, it also left little margin for error heading into the final group fixture.

Simply sitting deep is unlikely to be enough against Egypt. Amir Ghalenoei is expected to adopt a more proactive setup, potentially switching to an attack-minded 4-4-2 to get the best out of Mehdi Taremi, Shahriar Moghanlou, and Mohammad Mohebi. Iran possess enough attacking quality to exploit Egypt’s uncertainty in central defense if they commit players forward.

The trade-off, however, is increased defensive exposure. Opening the game will inevitably leave space behind the back line—exactly the kind of opportunities Salah, Ziko, and Omar Marmoush thrive on. Goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand could once again play a decisive role if Iran are to keep their hopes alive.
