Uruguay: Searching for answers as pressure begins to build

Uruguay’s World Cup campaign has been far from convincing. Widely tipped to top the group, Marcelo Bielsa’s side has instead settled for draws against Saudi Arabia (1-1) and Cape Verde (2-2), leaving their qualification hopes under greater pressure than expected.

The concern extends beyond the results. Questions over Bielsa’s relationship with the squad have resurfaced, with reports of internal tension echoing the issues that followed the 2024 Copa América. While the coach remains committed to his demanding philosophy, Uruguay have yet to display the cohesion and fluency expected from one of South America’s strongest sides.

Going forward, Uruguay have generated plenty of attempts but lacked composure and efficiency in the final third. They have produced 44 shots across two matches, yet many have come from long range or difficult angles. Darwin Núñez is still searching for his best form, while surprisingly it is Maximiliano Araújo—more naturally known for his defensive contributions—who leads the team’s scoring.

Spain: Confidence restored after emphatic response

Spain quickly bounced back after being frustrated in a scoreless draw against Cape Verde. Luis de la Fuente made several tactical adjustments, refreshed his attacking lineup, and watched his side cruise to a dominant 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia.

The early stages proved decisive, as Spain struck three times inside the opening 24 minutes, allowing them to control the contest and conserve energy. The convincing win ended their recent struggles in front of goal at the World Cup and restored confidence ahead of another key group-stage encounter.

Spain could be even stronger this time around. Nico Williams is expected to return to the starting lineup after recovering to full fitness, while Lamine Yamal already made an immediate impact by scoring against Saudi Arabia. Together with Mikel Oyarzabal, Spain may finally field their strongest attacking trio of the tournament.
