Brazil: Finding their rhythm at the right time

Brazil finished atop Group C, edging Morocco on tiebreakers after a composed group-stage campaign. Carlo Ancelotti’s men were held to a 1-1 draw in a demanding opener against Morocco, but quickly found their groove with convincing 3-0 victories over both Haiti and Scotland.

More encouraging than the scorelines has been Brazil’s growing tactical maturity. Rather than forcing the tempo, Ancelotti’s side has remained disciplined without the ball, patiently waiting for mistakes before launching swift and clinical attacks. That measured approach has made the Seleção look increasingly balanced as the tournament progresses.

Vinicius Junior has been the standout performer. The Real Madrid star found the net in all three group-stage matches, becoming Brazil’s first player since Ronaldo and Rivaldo in 2002 to score in every group fixture at a World Cup. With four goals, one assist, 3.51 expected goals, and four finishes from eight shots on target, he enters the knockout rounds as one of the tournament’s most dangerous attackers.

Japan: Reliable as ever, but another major test awaits

Japan have reached the World Cup knockout stage for the third consecutive tournament, confirming that their recent success is no coincidence. Hajime Moriyasu’s side negotiated a difficult group featuring the Netherlands, Sweden, and Tunisia, recording an emphatic 4-0 win over Tunisia while drawing with both the Dutch (2-2) and Sweden (1-1).

Even so, injuries and constant lineup changes have disrupted Japan's preparations. Moriyasu has yet to field the same starting XI twice, particularly in defense. Captain Ko Itakura was forced off with an injury against Sweden, while Takefusa Kubo missed the final two group matches after picking up a knock following the Netherlands encounter.

Should Kubo remain unavailable, Japan will again rely on the attacking trio of Daizen Maeda, Ritsu Doan, and Ayase Ueda to provide the cutting edge. The Samurai Blue remain a disciplined, high-intensity side capable of punishing mistakes, but history has repeatedly denied them a breakthrough in the knockout rounds, with previous exits coming against Turkey, Paraguay, Belgium, and Croatia.
