England’s World Cup journey continues after overcoming one of their toughest challenges of the tournament — a demanding trip to Mexico City and the high-altitude conditions of the Azteca Stadium.

Thomas Tuchel’s side entered the match facing multiple obstacles, from the unusual kickoff schedule and ongoing concerns at right-back to Mexico’s perfect record in the competition. Many expected the hosts to make life extremely difficult for the Three Lions in front of a passionate home crowd.

Instead, England delivered one of their most resilient performances of the tournament. Jude Bellingham scored twice, Harry Kane converted from the penalty spot once again, and Dan Burn played a crucial role as the defence stood firm. Despite playing with 10 men, England secured their place in the quarter-finals for the 11th time in World Cup history.

The performance was different from England’s usual approach. The Three Lions recorded just 33.2% possession — their lowest ever figure in a World Cup match on record — but showed outstanding efficiency on the counterattack and excellent defensive organisation.

England now arrive in Florida with momentum behind them, having won three consecutive matches while scoring at least twice in each victory. Overall, they have won six of their last seven games, with their only setback being a goalless draw against Ghana.

However, history provides a warning. England have struggled against European opponents in recent World Cup knockout matches, with five of their last six eliminations at this stage of the tournament coming against teams from Europe.

Norway, meanwhile, have produced one of the most exciting campaigns in their World Cup history. Their only defeat so far came against France, when a heavily rotated side lost 4-1. Since then, Ståle Solbakken’s team has defeated opponents from Africa and South America, proving they can compete with the best.

Erling Haaland has been the symbol of Norway’s rise. The Manchester City striker scored a powerful header against Brazil before producing a moment of individual brilliance to fire into the bottom corner, helping Norway eliminate the five-time world champions.

The victory also extended Norway’s remarkable record of never losing to Brazil in senior men’s football and secured their first-ever World Cup quarter-final appearance.

Norway have provided plenty of entertainment throughout the tournament, scoring 12 goals while conceding nine across five matches. They are only the second team in World Cup history to reach the later stages after scoring and conceding at least 10 goals in the same tournament, following West Germany’s 1954 title-winning side.

Despite their impressive run, Norway face some historical challenges. They have never defeated another European nation at the World Cup and have failed to score in their last four meetings with England. The Three Lions also hold a clear advantage in their head-to-head record, winning seven of their nine previous encounters.

The two nations have not met since 2014, when Wayne Rooney’s penalty gave England a 1-0 friendly victory. With both teams relying on strong personalities and high-pressure moments, another dramatic finish — potentially even a penalty shootout — could decide who advances to the semi-finals to face either Argentina or Switzerland.
